How to Install a Product Key (GVLK) for Windows and Windows Server #

If you’re converting a computer from a KMS host, MAK, or retail edition of Windows to a KMS client, you need to install the applicable product key, also known as GVLK (Generic Volume License Key). GVLKs are used for volume activation with Key Management Services (KMS). Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to install a GVLK on your Windows or Windows Server system.

Manual Installation Activation Steps #

Prerequisites #

Before proceeding, ensure that you have a valid and legal product key for your Windows version and edition. Using unauthorized or pirated product keys is against Microsoft’s terms of service and can lead to legal consequences.

Installation Steps #

1. Open an Administrative Command Prompt: Right-click on the “Start” button and select “Windows Terminal (Admin)” or “Command Prompt (Admin).” If you are using Windows 11 or Windows 10, you can search for “Command Prompt,” right-click on it, and choose “Run as administrator.”

2. Locate the Appropriate Product Key (GVLK): Find the GVLK for your Windows or Windows Server version and edition from the following list:

   • Windows Server 2022:

3. Install the Product Key (GVLK): In the administrative command prompt, type the following command, replacing <product key> with the appropriate GVLK:

slmgr /ipk <product key>

For example, to install the GVLK for Windows Server 2022 Datacenter edition, the command would be:

slmgr /ipk WX4NM-KYWYW-QJJR4-XV3QB-6VM33

4. Press Enter: After entering the command, press Enter. The system will attempt to install the specified product key.

5. Confirmation Message: If the installation is successful, you should see a confirmation message indicating that the product key was installed.

If you don’t see a confirmation message or you want to force windows to try to activate following using the key, try the following commands:

slmgr /ato
slmgr /dlv

• Always ensure you are using a valid and legal product key for your Windows version and edition.
• The “slmgr” command deals with licensing and activation, so use it with caution.
